Video surveillance will be taken to the next level at this year’s Boston Marathon. Drones equipped with high definition cameras will be patrolling the skies above the route, adding another layer of protection for runners and spectators.
Video proved instrumental to the capture of 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. That event was a game changer, and is often cited as a turning point for the way security is handled at soft targets and outdoor venues.
Besides drones, more than 5,000 uniformed and plain-clothes law enforcement officers will be stationed along the route. In addition, vehicles from the Department of Public Works will be used to block closed streets to prevent cars from being able to drive into the crowds.
