In the wake of the debate over trade agreements comes news of a new technology that could return manufacturing jobs to the U.S., or so its inventor claims.
Currently, robots handle parts of the garment-making process but people are still needed to feed fabric into sewing machines. Seems the androids aren’t very good at handling soft materials. The new technology remedies that by stiffening fabric, making it sturdy and easy to manipulate.
Whether or not this results in a reshoring of production, full automatic for the apparel industry is just a matter of time; some say its as little as 5 years, and will have implications throughout the supply chain.
