New Mexico School district buys ballistic shields to keep security guards safe

The Las Cruces School district has just purchased 30 ballistic shields to better protect guards who patrol the district’s middle and secondary schools. It is the first school district in the country to make such a purchase.
Las Cruces has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes. Your chance of becoming a victim is one in 19. Within New Mexico, more than 90% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Las Cruces.

But the purchase isn’t the result of a spike in crime at the city’s schools; rather the district is taking a “better safe than sorry” approach to its security needs.

Each shield costs around $70. The district hopes to purchase additional ones for its teachers in the near future.
