The Philadelphia PD is the first department in the nation to equip its patrol cars with bulletproof windows.
The vehicles have ballistic shields affixed to the front door panels. The protection covers the front sides of the car, but does not extend to the windshield.
About 150 cars that patrol in high crime areas are slated to be equipped with the protection. The modification adds $1,300 to the overall cost of the car, an expense well worth in it given the ambushes across the nation on uniformed law enforcement officers.
